PEOPLE wanting to help make Batley greener can take advantage of an exhibition in Birstall.
The sustainability and climate change exhibition at Birstall Shopping Park at Junction 27 aims to raise awareness of the simple measures householders and employees in the area can take to help reduce water, waste and energy use.

Members of Kirklees Energy Services, Leeds City Council recycling and waste department, Why Waste in Bradford and regeneration charity Groundwork are on hand to offer tips and advice on minimising waste and energy in the home.

Thousands of visitors will get the chance to see how making small changes can help reduce the town's carbon footprint.

Display boards will give practical information on energy use, carbon emissions, sustainable transport, water use, recycling and waste reduction and visitors will be able to take away information and freebies and enter competitions.

Shopping park manager Denis Copeland said the exhibition was part of centre owner British Land's drive to become carbon neutral by next year.

He said: "The aim of the exhibition is to help everyone become more environmentally friendly. With around 90 per cent of CO2 emissions in British Land properties coming from customer-controlled areas the launch of the exhibition underlines its determination to advance the cause of sustainability and climate change in partnership with our customers."

The exhibition, which is supported by HRH the Prince of Wales and the Prime Minister, was officially launched by council leader Coun Robert Light.

He said: "Managing the effects of climate change is a priority for public and private organisations, and all citizens have a role to play. I therefore commend this event for presenting the issue in very practical terms to thousands of people in our region."

The exhibition continues until Sunday March 9.
