The Dewsbury and Batley and District Society for the Blind held its annual meeting at the Whitfield Centre in Soothill and celebrated 90 years' service to visually impaired people in the local community.
Winners of the Ronald Hall Trophy were Martin McPhillips and Jim Inglis, who are both registered as blind and who cope with other chronic illnesses.

General manager Hilary Schreiner said: “Since the opening of the centre in 1999 they have relentlessly given of their time as volunteers in order to help others.

“The activity in which they are jointly most involved is the computer room.

“This service more than any other has helped members move on when they have been depressed because of their sight loss or simply wanting to try a new venture.”

The society also presented Zimba, Martin’s guide dog, with a rosette, certificate and chewy bone.

“Not only do they both act as ambassadors for the society visiting local schools but Zimba’s gentle and caring ways cheer every one up at the centre too,“ added Hilary.

Hilary gave a brief history of the society followed by anecdotes from members.
