WAYS to get young people to take a pride in the town's cemetery were discussed at a crisis meeting of Batley Cemetery Support Group last week.
The group wants to encourage more and younger people to explore the cemetery's Twin Chapels after it was rescued from closure.
Following an appeal in the News from former co-ordinator Malcolm Haigh, which urged people to keep the group active and
relevant, an encouraging number of new volunteers stepped forward to take on managerial roles.
After being impressed by the facilities on a tour of the Twin Chapels, members proposed efforts should be made to make them more widely known and available.
They agreed to stage open days on Sunday July 13 and Saturday September 13 when visitors can take tours of the chapels, inspect photographic exhibitions and take refreshments in the cafe.
Mr Haigh will also take a tour around some of the more interesting graves in the cemetery.
Diana Watts, one of three people who have taken over management of the Twin Chapels Centre, said a volunteer scheme has been launched whereby people can offer their personal skills to help in its running and maintenance.
The number of courses available at the centre will also be increased, including computer and literacy classes, family history and first aid. Another meeting will be held at the chapels on Wednesday May 21, at 7pm.
For details, visit the centre – open weekdays 9am-12.30pm – or email info@twinchapels.org.uk.
