A GROUP of women in Birstall had the chance to test out their new-found skills as part of International Women's Day celebrations.

Nine women from Fieldhead, Birstall, have spent the past two months learning professional face painting skills, which they demonstrated on participants at Fieldhead Community Centre.
Deborah Theabould, from the arts agency Loca, who led the course, taught the women how to create special effects and colourful characters such as robots and tigers.
Each of the women has developed a personal portfolio, and it is hoped they can use the skills in a professional or business context inspiring them to take further training in such areas as theatre make-up and cosmetic makeovers.
Claire Vickers, one of the participants, said: "The course has been brilliant. I've really enjoyed it. I've gained confidence about being creative and have since been asked to do some face painting for a community play."
Loca worked in partnership with the Local Neighbourhood Learning Network, which promotes and runs adult learning opportunities in community settings, and felt face painting was a good option for parents of young children to learn practical skills.
The Fieldhead Neighbourhood Learning Network includes local representatives from the Fieldhead School and Children's Centre, Dewsbury College, and KMC's Adult Education Team.
