Anger over lack of help

Kirklees Council is not doing enough to maintain his property, says an outraged tenant.

Jack Hoole, 55, of Howley Walk, Soothill, claims the building, which contains several flats, has been subjected to vandalism.

The communal door has been broken, allowing anyone to get into the building.

The area surrounding the flats has also been blighted with rubbish for months.

Mr Hoole, who is a tenant of Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, believes his property is being neglected.

He said: “I’ve reported this several times but nothing has been done about it.

“Kids are coming around at night and they are kicking the door in.

“I’ve found them smoking and playing football in the hall way. They just see it as somewhere to hang out.”

Glass, food containers and housegood goods have also been dumped near his home for months.

“It stunk,” added Mr Hoole. “I cleaned it up a couple of months ago and it was a mess.

“Kids are walking home from school and throwing their litter around and knocking over the bins.

“We had our bins stolen so had to share with other flats. More needs to be done.”

On Wedenesday, the council delivered eight new green and black bins to residents.

They also cleared rubbish from outside the flats.

A spokesperson from Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing said: “Kirklees Building Services repaired the communal door after it was vandalised in November 2012.

“We have not had any reports of other problems since then. However, a housing officer will be visiting tenants to find out more about the issues they’re raising and will order a door repair if necessary.

“We’re keen to work with residents and partners in other agencies to tackle any problems in the area.”
