Celebrating Batley’s volunteers
HIGH FLYERS Councillors and volunteers celebrate the success of their projects.
Volunteers came together to celebrate their success and share their stories.
At last week’s Batley, Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee meeting, voluntary groups that had benefitted from committee funding in the last financial year were invited to present their achievements.
From youth clubs to a therapeutic garden, book publishing to science education, community projects across the three wards have flourished.
Meeting chair Coun Gwen Lowe (Lab, Batley West) said: “It’s been such a wonderful evening for everybody to show how this money has made a difference.”
Groups that spoke at the meeting included the Batley Cemetery Support Group, who recieved funding towards the rebuilding of the Stairway to Infinity at the cemetery.
The Communities United Project, which organised multi-sport activites for youngsters from the Nova Estate in Birstall, received £2,250 last year.
Envisage Arts transformed derelict land behind Batley Central Methodist Church into a blooming community garden, offering employment opportunities to adult and youth offenders.
Employment project Step by Step offered job-seeking help to more than 500 people, while a grant of £10,140 allowed for the refurbishment of Howden Clough Community Centre.
The Gujurati Writers Forum received £400 to promote two new books and Dewsbury Rotary Club held its committee-supported school technology tournament on Tuesday.
Funding also allowed young people to tell the story of the Burundi refugees as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day events at Dewsbury Town Hall in January.
