A ROUTINE job took a dramatic turn for a Batley police sergeant at the weekend when he ended up saving the life of a two-week old baby in front of shocked party revellers.

Sgt Chris Hughes gave the 15-day old boy CPR while waiting for an ambulance to arrive at Greenhead Park, where rapper Tinchy Stryder was headlining at Party in the Park.

Sgt Hughes, from Batley Neighbourhood Policing Team, was on crowd-monitoring duty at the Huddersfield event on Sunday night when he noticed a disturbance near to Coletta’s Cafe in Greenhead Park.

He heard someone saying a baby boy had stopped breathing.

He said: “I found a very distressed woman holding a very young baby boy who I could clearly see was blue around the lips and limp. The father of the baby passed him to me and I examined him but he wasn’t breathing.

“I turned the baby over and patted his back to clear any blockage but this didn’t have any obvious effect.

“I then carried out two rescue breaths, followed by chest compressions, which resulted in gurgling and a small amount of movement from the baby boy.

“It was then I was joined by a paramedic who took over and we quickly got the baby to the ambulance.”

Sgt Hughes, who works at Batley Police Station, said he organised for the baby’s father and his two other children to get to the hospital while the mother went in the ambulance.

Acting Chief Insp Adrian Waugh, who leads Neighbourhood Policing in Kirklees, said: “Sgt Hughes’ actions clearly helped save the life of this baby boy.

“His quick thinking and quick acting no doubt prevented a tragic outcome.”

The baby’s parents have said they are grateful to everyone who helped save his life.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, where he is believed to be doing well.

The incident happened at around 7.30pm, as hip-hop artist Stryder performed to a crowd of 8,000 people at the Kirklees Council-organised free event.
