Let’s all spend a penny – Thought for the Week by the Rev Patrick Senior, St Saviour’s Church, Brownhill
Rev Patrick Senior
Everyone needs to spend a penny. In our country we have access to toilets and we value the privacy of the moment, in other parts of the world a toilet is an unheard-of luxury. We are healthy and free of infection while others suffer with problems we’d rather not mention. In developing countries 50 per cent of beds are taken up by people who have an illness caused by poor sanitation. And many women get bitten by snakes as they squat in the grass.
Tearfund and CORD have established toilettwinning.org. You can twin your loo with a new one in a location which doesn’t have one. We can help flush away poverty by spending a penny. Aeylech Tomas from Ethiopia is full of fear every time she has to go to the toilet in the open: “I am always afraid that someone might see me. If the boys or men see us they might attack or rape us.”
We can help with an initiative like Toilet Twinning. Imagine if every home, church and workplace took up this idea, we could really change people’s lives.
