Respect for teachers

TEACHERS in England are constantly being criticised.

Curiously in Scotland and Wales they are valued and the standard of education is high.

I taught for 26 years in the same school, which changed from a boys’ grammar to a mixed comprehensive.

I retired after a 14-year-old lout threw a chair at me. He missed! (Typical).

Teaching is a difficult and dangerous job, on a par with the police and ambulance services. Nor is it just 8.30am-4pm in the building. There is quite a lot of social work visiting involved, as well as lesson preparation and marking, reporting to management etc.

I have had several jobs, and teaching was my fourth favourite, preceded by radio operator for taxis and delivering newspapers.

To sum up, teachers should be better treated. No chance!
