Thought for the week

OUR cousins across the pond have chosen their President for the next four years. Months of campaigning have brought them here and now the world will be watching to see what the most powerful man in the world will do at home and abroad.

What do we look for in a leader? Charisma? Strength? Determination? Fortitude? The German people found that in Adolf Hitler! Honesty? Integrity? Compassion? Yes, that’s better, and perhaps humility. Jesus set a new pattern when he taught that the greatest should be humble, putting others first, always ready to serve. He practiced it as he put the needs of others before his own, stopping to help whenever he had opportunity. His was a hard act to follow but, after his resurrection, the apostles set out to do just that. Through the years Jesus’ true disciples have tried to do the same - modelling their leadership on him. Humility and service: that’s God’s way.

I wonder if the President will have that attitude. The world will be a better and safer place if he does.
