A pleasant surprise at Veterans' Day
IT was a pleasant surprise to meet Batley Veterans, and Coun Peter O'Neill, at the Veterans' Day celebration held in Huddersfield St Peter's Garden.
It was most appropriate that the sacrifices made by the wartime generation, who gave so much for the love of freedom and country, is not forgotten. All the rest would be meaningless as it would not be here, including the prosperity we enjoy today, which is based on the foundation that generation laid.
That brought back my memory when, shortly after the war, still under service contract and with a surveyor's qualification, I came to Batley to work as a weaver to fill a vacancy in that industry.
People at that time worked hard for little reward to rebuild this country, which was economically ruined by the long war.
Meeting Batley Veterans that I worked with in the same mill at Batley in 1947 added to my pleasure.
