THE Salvation Army would like to respond to the article regarding the Take Your Shoes Off carpet and local history exhibition publicised in the Batley and Birstall News of August 21.
As Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army in Yorkshire I would like to make clear that the opinions expressed in the report by Heckmondwike Corps secretary Heather Exley are her personal opinions alone and in no way reflect the views of the Sa
lvation Army.
I am aware that the Heckmondwike Salvation Army Corps has been actively involved in contributing positively and inclusively to the exhibition as part of their Over Sixty Group's study of local history and the role played by the carpet industry.
This I believe has been carried out in full harmony with Kirklees Museums and Galleries, Common Threads, Safer Stronger Communities, Khoosh women and other members of the local community.
Indeed, The Salvation Army in Heckmondwike has successfully worked with Safer Stronger Communities and other multi-faith and cultural groups before as part of last year's Party in the Park event.
Working with the Churches Together group, the corps organised and held a community celebration where one of the aims was to foster strong community relations and cohesion.
As an International Church and charity operating in 115 countries, the Salvation Army has a long history of working closely with other Christian denominations and other faiths and here in Yorkshire enjoy harmonious relationships with people of other faiths born out of mutual respect and understanding.
We greatly value those relationships which help build community and to develop understanding between people of faith.
I give my full support to the exhibition and strongly encourage people to visit to discover the town's history and links with the textile industry.
