LIKE most local folk, Batley's councillors were stunned at the news of the possibility of Northern Foods taking Fox's Biscuits out of Batley.
The company has been part of the history of the town over the last century and a half. Generations of Batley families have worked at Fox's, a major employer which is crucial to the local economy.
It is unthinkable that we might lose a company that has been the lifeblood of Batley for so long.
Ward councillors are working hard alongside our MP Mike Wood and senior council officers, to ensure everything is done to find a new site for Fox's, as close as possible to their existing one.
We feel sure that there is nowhere better placed than Batley, for the most cost-effective option for further investment.
Local people's experience, skills and knowledge made Fox's the world renowned brand that it is. The expertise of the people of Batley may well be the company's greatest asset, having provided the loyal workforce required for biscuit production since the company first opened. They are priceless!
In view of this, we will work to facilitate access to any potential site in Batley, that would be of interest to Northern Foods.
We will ensure that the necessary infrastructure is provided and also training to top up skills that workers may require. We will put forward a strong case and do all we can to convince Northern Foods that Fox's Biscuits belongs in Batley.
