I know the pub isn't empty

I WOULD like to respond to Mr Harrison (In Brief, page 4, News, August 28) to clarify the matter.
I regret any misunderstanding arising from a comment I made at a Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee meeting recently.
I spoke in support of an application for a fast food takeaway which I think would improve a location which is currently an eyesore.
The application was recommended for refusal because of inadequate off-street car parking and it was suggested that customers would park on the highway, which would create a road safety hazard.
I commented that there is a pub nearby, with a car park which is nearly always empty, that perhaps could be used. I did not imply that the pub was empty. I pass it most days and I know it is not closed. The two businesses might even have complemented each other!
My comment was in line with my objectives as a councillor, which include: the removal of 'grot spots', improvement of run-down areas and helping to create the conditions that allow businesses to flourish and communities to thrive.
I would like to take this opportunity, to wish Mr and Mrs Harrison much success.
COUN PETER O'NEILL
(Labour, Batley West)
