Losing our shops....
I WAS astonished to hear that we were going to lose two of the busiest shops in Batley. Check-out certainly keeps this end of Batley going and Dysons, the greengrocer's (pictured] is a lovely shop. The people in these shops are pleasant and hard working.
I did hear in one shop that if they kept it on, they had to take it on for 10 years. Why not five or three years? Surely it's better to have a good shop running than to close it and give way to Tesco all the time.
Who do the shops belong to? Is it the council or various owners?
Apparently the market has gone downhill because of high rents and it looks as if the shops will be the same.
Could someone enlighten me on this? Are we going to have a main street with more shops empty than full? Everywhere we go we find Tesco has taken them over and started selling their type of goods – the last instance being the pharmacy.
I would appreciate some answers from the town centre manager if that is his job. Are we going to reduce rents? Are we going to make people commit to 10 years when, who knows, we might not have a main street then!
I remember Batley Market 50 years ago and what a market we had then! What a great shopping street too. Of course you will say – no supermarkets then, but what a great character Batley shopping centre had.
