Why Scotland?

I AM trying to find out the origins of the name of the pub The Scotland Inn on Bradford Road, Birstall. I am told it is the only pub in England called so.
Various theories have been given to me but no proof is available.
One theory is that a lot of Scottish miners came down to work in the coal mine that was situated a short distance away.
I have looked at the 1881 census and I am sure that the pub was there then as a public house but it does not appear on the census.
This makes me believe that the pub had a different name in 1881 and was later renamed the Scotland but I can't prove that.
Can anyone help?
