Bohemian art
Patrick Proktor's Jimi Hendrix III
An exhibition featuring the art and life of Patrick Procktor, whose subjects included Jimi Hendrix, is to be featured at Huddersfield Art Gallery starting this weekend.
Procktor was a quintessential artist of the 1960s and 70s, and part of a bohemian circle which also included his friends the artist David Hockney and fashion designer Ossie Clark.
A notable painter and printmaker, Procktor was the pre-eminent watercolourist of his generation. He was also a portraitist of distinction: his subjects include many of the figures with whom he associated (Derek Jarman, Jimi Hendrix, et al) and his portraits of the actress Jill Bennett and of playwright Joe Orton are amongst the iconic images of the era. Procktor was also a painter of landscape, whose travels in India, Italy, China and Egypt inspired important bodies of work.
This exhibition – the first museum show since his death in 2003 – considers this somewhat neglected artist in depth, and includes paintings and works on paper from all stages of his four-decades-long career.
It opens on Saturday and runs until November 10.
