Rugby star Danny Maun won lots of young admirers when he opened a brand new adventure playground at Soothill Working Men’s Club on Saturday.

The Batley Bulldogs player, currently enjoying his testimonial year, was invited to unveil the playground because of the large number of Bulldogs supporters among the club’s growing membership.

But the way he and Tony Wisher, the club’s mascot Battler, were ready to meet with the children and attempt to scale the climbing wall won lots of applause from youngsters and adults alike.

The playground, consisting of wooden towers, swings, a footbridge and slide, is the latest move by the active club committee to provide something to attract young families to the club.

President Chris Hobson said he remembered when he and his elder brother Paul were taken to the club by their father to play in the grounds while their parents enjoyed an afternoon or early evening drink.

“We wanted to go one step further now and provide equipment which would make it even more enjoyable for the youngsters and more relaxing for their parents,” he said.

The playground, provided in co-operation with Clark’s Wakefield Brewery, is the latest upgrade for the club which has seen membership rise and finances grow in strength as it approaches its centenary year.

Because of the size of the building its weekly programme already includes two bingo nights, two quiz nights, occasional entertainment and offers darts, billiards and snooker.

The club has just won the second division of the Spen Valley Darts League and very shortly, said president Chris, the club will have new pool table delivered and seek to enrol a team in a local pool league.

The club’s secretary James Marrero-Allen added: “The adventure playground is aimed at young families but our long term ambition is to draw upon the widespread support we have in the community to help people of all ages enjoy themselves even more.”

Visitors also enjoyed a bouncy castle, barbecue and various stalls at the family fun day.
