A NEW team of synchronised swimmers are hoping to make a splash at Batley Baths.
Training sessions for the unusual sport began in October and the group is appealing for more swimmers to join the fun.
The excitement of the summer’s Olympic Games saw the Borough of Kirklees synchronised swimming club inundated with potential new members.
As the requests to join the squad came in, the swimming club decided to form a new team at the Cambridge Street pool and are keen to welcome more swimmers.
The sport sees squads of highly trained swimmers perform routines to music, with moves performed both on the surface and underwater.
Synchronised swimming even featured in this year’s Britain’s Got Talent with act Aquabatique.
The squad’s coach, Jade Wyke, has been taking part in the sport for nine years.
The 18-year-old enjoyed swimming but wasn’t fast enough to race.
Then she discovered synchronised swimming.
She said: “You just need swimming skills, we can work on the other skills.
“You need to be confident underwater.”
Jade’s mum, organiser Tracy Wyke said: “They say it’s like water ballet with a bit of gymnastics thrown in.”
The squad trains on Tuesdays from 5.30pm-6.30pm.
Children should have at least Stage 4 swimming skills. Email boksynchro@hotmail.co.uk.
