THE £11.1m scheme to transform Fieldhead Estate has been given the green light by Kirklees Council.
Planning permission has been granted to build 140 family homes to replace some of the run down flats in the estate. Developers are now awaiting a decision about government funding, due next month, before they can get started.

n Project will see the demolition of 155 unpopular flats in five areas of the estate – carried out in phases – and the building of new affordable two and three-bedroom homes by developer Keepmoat. Of the new homes, 78 will be for rent with some for shared ownership and 62 will be built for sale.
The homes will be owned by charity organisation Kirklees Community Association (KCA).
The development will also create new communal areas for the estate.
Phase one includes the area around the Lowood Lane shops, Branwell Avenue and Rochester Road.
Plans seen by the News show a new road layout, with the main route through the estate going from Lowood Lane onto Howarth Road. There will be a give way point onto Lowood Lane towards the shopping area.
They also show a shopping area with provisional detail for a youth shelter and a toddler's play area in a housing development off Howarth Road. The phase will see up to 44 new houses built and four new shops with accommodation above.
Keepmoat will also be helping locals with jobs, providing apprenticeships and training opportunities.
Of the £11.1m cost of the scheme, £2m is to be spent on environmental improvements.
