KAREN Matthews has been charged with the kidnap and false imprisonment of her nine-year-old daughter, Shannon.
The new charges were read out as Karen Matthews appeared at Leeds Crown Court this morning.

The 32-year-old, of Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, denied those charges and an earlier charge of perverting the course of justice. She did not enter a plea to an earlier charge of child neglect.

Michael Donovan, 39, of Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr, also pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnap and false imprisonment. A further charge of perverting the course of justice was put to him, which he also denied.

Shannon was found on 19 February, 24 days after she vanished.

The schoolgirl was found at Donovan's flat in Batley Carr, less than a mile from her Dewsbury Moor home, 24 days after she went missing.

Donovan is the uncle of Karen's former partner, Craig Meehan.

Donovan is accused of "unlawfully and by force or fraud" taking Shannon Matthews against her will.

He is further charged with unlawfully imprisoning the schoolgirl and detaining her against her will.

A trial date was earlier set for 11 November.
