A HOWDEN Clough mum who was told she could not have a memorial for her daughter is now allowed a plaque to mark where she died.
Sue Harrison was distraught earlier this year when she was told to remove flowers, which were attached to a fence outside the Windsor Road flat where Laura Harrison’s body was found in August last year.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH), which owns the flat, said neighbours in nearby flats had complained about the floral tributes, and asked the family to remove them.

Sue said she was saddened about taking the flowers down and had kept them at her home.

Now KNH has agreed to a plaque being placed to mark where Laura’s body was found and granted permission for the family to place flowers at the fence for a week to mark Laura’s birthday and the day she died.

Laura’s aunt Debbie Smith said it would have been Laura’s 27th birthday on March 22, and the family wanted to mark it with something special.

She said: “The council went around the residents asking if it would be ok for us to put the plaque up, and they all agreed.

“One of the tenants has also suggested that we plant some bulbs in the garden and we are looking into that. We want to make it somewhere nice for all the family and Laura’s friends to go and remember Laura

“We are grateful to everyone who has allowed us to remember Laura in this way, and thank the Birstall News for its help.”

A KNH spokeswoman said: “We’ve given the family permission to put up a plaque and leave flowers twice a year to commemorate Laura.

“This is a compromise that was agreed after talking at length with the family and consulting with local residents.”

Laura lived for some time in Windsor Road, but moved in with her mum in Heckmondwike shortly before her tragic death.

Two men, aged 31 and 39 were arrested on suspicion of drug offences in connection with Laura’s death. They were released on police bail, pending further enquiries.
