A SCHIZOPHRENIC who thought his father was a paedophile beat him to death with a plumbing pipe.
Richard Thorpe was told he could spend the rest of his life in hospital after admitting killing his father, road sweeper Eddie Thorpe.

Thorpe, 26, falsely believed his father was a paedophile and later told police he wanted him "out of his life".

On Monday he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Leeds Crown Court.

Prosecutor Neil Clark told the court that on the night of February 20, Thorpe did not sleep and had formulated the idea that his father had sexually abused him as a child.

At 6am the next day he went from his flat on Bradford Road, Batley, to his father's house, on Howard Street, knowing he would be leaving for work. He brandished a pipe he had brought from home and hit his father over the head with it.

Mr Clark said: "His father fell back down the concrete steps and screamed out that his arm was broken. The defendant went to sit on the wall and heard his father screaming for help and Richard Thorpe's sister crying from the house. He stamped hard, up to 10 times, on his head as he felt he had to shut him up."

Thorpe later told police he held the pipe for an hour beforehand "to ensure he'd got a good grip on it".

Thorpe's brother Robert, 23, and sister Melissa, 28, both saw the attack. Mr Clark said Thorpe had a history of mental illness since 2004 that had led to violence before.

Dr John Kent, who assessed Thorpe for the defence, said: "The view that his father was a paedophile was a delusional belief and entirely a figment of his imagination."

Dr Kent said Thorpe posed a risk of serious harm to the public and could relapse in the future.

Freddy Apfel, mitigating, said Thorpe was full of remorse and had been suicidal since the attack.

He added: "He was clearly a very sick man on the day and acted out of character when he committed this act."

Sentencing Thorpe, the Recorder of Leeds Peter Collier QC said: "On February 21 you killed your father while your mental responsibility was impaired through schizophrenia.

"The effect on your family has been devastating and your responsibility is accepted by the prosecution to have been impaired.

"I am satisfied it's necessary for the protection of the public from serious harm to make a restriction order and I am satisfied that should be made without a limit of time."
