Regeneration blamed as gas supply is cut off

A BIRSTALL trader has blamed the regeneration of the village centre for leaving her shop without gas.
But supplier United Utilities said if it wasn't for contractors in the market place, a gas leak could have gone unnoticed.
Anne Thompson, whose husband Michael owns Sea Spray Fisheries, said the gas supply to their Low Lane shop was cut off over the weekend forcing them to close all day on Monday while it was restored.
A spokeswoman for United Utilities said contractors smelled gas while they were working on Sunday. An engineer attended and found the gas pipe leading to the shop was corroded.
She said they replaced the gas pipe and reconnected the supply within 24 hours.
Coun Andrew Palfreeman (Cons, Birstall and Birkenshaw) said the council and contractors assured local traders there would be minimum disruption as far as possible.
