A woman was knocked to the floor and kicked in the head for trying to defend herself against a would-be mugger in a gang.
The attack, described as "horrendous" by police, happened in Mount Pleasant on Wedneday February 14.

A 48-year-old woman was walking along Purlwell Lane at about 8.20pm when she encountered a gang of about 10 Asian males near the zebra crossing.

One member of the gang pulled his hood over his head and screamed at her.

She later told police she told them to "just grow up" and carried on walking.

But as she was waking past them, she felt a tug on her handbag and turned round to see the same person who screamed at her trying to grab her bag.

She hit him in the face, and he reacted by attacking her.
He punched her in the face, knocking her to the floor, before kicking her in the head.

The gang then left empty-handed. The victim told police she could hear them laughing as they ran away.

She was taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital, where she was treated for a 3 to 4cm cut above her left eye, a swollen cheekbone and reddening to her eye.

She was later discharged from hospital.

Det Con Russ Conlon, of Huddersfield CID, said: "Obviously, as far as we are concerned, it was quite a cowardly attack on a female who has tried to hold onto her possessions but has suffered the consequences of being beaten up.
"It's horrendous, it really is a terrible attack."

The suspect is described as an asian male, about 5ft 4ins, and of slim build. He was wearing a black jacket with its hood up.

Det Con Conlon said he hoped the other members of the gang would get an attack of conscience and tell the police who carried out the beating.

He said: "I hope they realise what they have done and ring in with the name of this offender."

Anyone with information should contact Dewsbury Police Helpdesk on 01924431, and ask for the CID robbery team, or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
