As John Paul Young sang, spring is in the air, everywhere you look around – and that certainly seems to be true of the weather at least.

With the mild temperatures, new shoots of growth are popping up all around.

And at the Batley Business Association (BBA) we are continuing to do what we can to keep promoting those new shoots of growth for the town.

It is a pity, therefore, that the recent budget did not deliver what a lot of small business people were hoping for – a helping hand for the high street.

Local shops and town centres are in many ways the heart of the community – it is where we go to buy our necessities and also those little treats that we all need from time to time.

It is where we bump into friends and family and have a quick catch up, maybe over a cuppa in one of the cafes.

On an evening we can go for a meal, a pint, or both.

In Batley we are lucky to have a great choice of all these things. But it would be nice to see more.

New businesses bring a new vibrancy to towns, it is in all our interests to encourage new business to Batley.

Now to be fair to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, the budget did not really make life more difficult for small business, so it’s a no score draw.

Hopefully there will be better news in the next budget, and in the meantime we continue to remain positive.

Having worked in Batley for over 20 years now I know just how important the town centre is to local people, and in my capacity as chairman of the BBA I know how hard traders work for the town.

As a group we hope to do what we can to support Batley – on April 17 we have a free Easter egg hunt for local children, which will see children taken around shops and businesses searching out clues and picking up some goodies along the way.

The event will be run by Batley Baths in partnership with the BBA.

Then on May 31, we have Batley Vintage Day – more information coming soon.
