A runner from Dewsbury wants to help commemorate her mother in the most fitting way.
Debbie Crewe will take part in the Race for life event at Thornes Park on Sunday June 1.
Her mother Wendy Crewe lost her life to skin cancer in 2002 after a five-year battle with the disease. She was 40 years old.
And Debbie, 26, said she wanted to take a stand against the disease in memory of her mother.
“Sadly, I’m no longer able to spend time with my mum,” she said. “Taking part in Race for Life is my way of fighting back against the disease that took my mum away. It gives me the opportunity to pay tribute to her and remember all the special moments we shared.
“By taking part in the event I’ll be honouring my mum’s memory as well as raising money for Cancer Research UK’s vital research to help other families affected by the disease.
“I want to encourage other women to sign up for Race for Life. Some will be motivated to do so in memory of their mothers, like me.
“Others will have the opportunity to take part alongside their mums as a wonderful way of spending time together in a defiant gesture to cancer.”
Race for Life is a series of women-only running events across the country which raise money for Cancer Research UK. Last year, 2,000 women took part in Race for Life in Wakefield and raised a fantastic £100,000.
Debbie, who lost more than five stone at Slimming World in the past year, will take part in the race with fellow group members.
Sarah Threadgall, Race for Life event manager in Yorkshire, said: “We’d like to thank Debbie for her support and we’re urging other women to follow her lead by signing up to Race for Life today.
“Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.
“Race for Life events are not competitive, so there’s no need to worry about being fit or fast.
“Women come from different backgrounds and walks of life but they are united by their absolute determination to take on cancer and beat it.”
