An iconic Gomersal pub was reduced to rubble this week as plans for a new mini supermarket on the site begin to take shape.
The White Horse in Gomersal, was demolished on Monday as Sainsbury’s look to build a new mini supermarket on the site, claiming it will create another 20 jobs.
Initial plans to replace the pub, in Oxford Road, into a Sainsbury’s Local convenience store were rejected because of the scale of the design, use and location of the building, projected traffic generation and insufficient parking.
But the Planning Inspectorate decided that the added traffic would not be sufficient to have an unacceptable effect on highway safety. Conditions included restrictions on the hours of deliveries and to ensure the site has adequate drainage.
Plans submitted to Kirklees Council indicate the supermarket will be 4,144 square feet, with space for 11 cars.
