The area, at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School on Healds Road, was opened by Councillor Gwen Lowe, deputy mayor of Kirklees.

During the ceremony, Cllr Lowe gave a heartfelt speech as a former member of the Friends of St Joseph’s when her own children attended the school. She had helped to instigate the first summer gala.

More than 360 people attended the gala on Friday 7 July and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with local organisations, children, parents and staff contributing to the success of the event.

This included headteacher Rob Barraclough, who not only played piano, but was also pelted with soggy sponges in order to raise funds.

He said: “Everything we can possibly do to make our learning environments fully supportive of our children’s education is worth it.

“We now have a wonderful area in which the children can enjoy hands-on learning about food origins, and caring for animals and the environment.

“Not only that, but the funds we raised at the gala will be put towards new outdoor play equipment for our younger children, following previous investment for the older children.

“All of these initiatives will give our children the very best experiences on their learning journeys and our school family is incredibly proud.

“We are determined to move forward with planned redevelopment of the school and the support of staff and families is invaluable.

“Every penny we raise is reinvested into the life of the children at our school.”

The school was successfully awarded matched Lottery Funding and work began on the extensive development in October 2016.
