Kirklees Council will not be able to close down Cleckheaton Library due to details written into its deed, a concerned user has claimed.

Eileen Newsome, of Turnstead Close, said the deed under which the library was built ensured its use could not be altered.

She said the land and money for construction, furnishings and books were supplied by John Mowat under the condition the grounds would be maintained and the site would remain a library.

“The deed binds the council to keep Cleckheaton a public library,” she said. “I’ve been a member for years and it would be a tragedy if people’s jobs were lost.”

Coun Kath Pinnock (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton) said an online petition had been set up and had gathered 569 signatures in 48 hours.

She said: “I’ve been stopped so many times by people who want to talk about the library.

“It is the fourth busiest in Kirklees. This is not a party political thing – it is about saving the libraries.”
