An extra special Valentine’s Day
Peter and Marjorie Noble on their wedding day in 1953.
Thursday was extra special for Birstall couple Peter and Marjorie Noble.
For not only was it Valentine’s Day, but it was also their diamond wedding. The pair married on February 14, 1953.
“But Valentine’s Day wasn’t the big thing it is now,” said Mrs Noble, 82.
Both from Birstall, Mr and Mrs Noble knew each other as children but met again when they worked in the same mill – Holton’s College.
“We got together from there and married four years later,” said Mr Noble, who is 86.

Mrs Noble was a weaver alongside her mother and sisters while her husband-to-be was an apprentice tuner. He went on to work at Newsome’s (now Redbrick Mill) where he was production controller before becoming a lecturer in management at Bradford University.
Mr Noble retired in 1992 but then spent more than 10 years as an adviser for Age Concern and still helps with that organisation in Birstall.
“It keeps me busy and I really enjoy it,” he said.
The couple, who have lived in the same house in Bradford Road for 47 years, have two sons and four grandchildren.
“We have a lovely family who look after us,” said Mrs Noble. “We are very lucky.”
The couple’s wedding took place at St Peter’s in Birstall, where they are still church members. Mrs Noble enjoys reading and gardening in her spare time while Mr Noble is a ‘silver surfer’.
Mrs Noble said: “Reaching the diamond anniversary is an achievement – mainly through tolerance and doing things together.”
Her husband said: “ We are two different people who simply gel.”
To celebrate, there was a family lunch at the weekend at Gomersal Park Hotel. Sixty years ago, their wedding reception was at Laburnum Hall in Birstall with the ham salad meals costing 2/6d a head. For honeymoon, they went to Blackpool.
And they had one last word: “Never go to Blackpool in February!”
