LITTLE Alfie Holland has faced more challenges than most in his first three years.

Born with half a heart, he has undergone numerous tests and major operations which have meant months spent in hospital.

He also suffered a stroke in February which left him partially paralysed and unable to speak.

But through it all his determination and bravery has proved an inspiration to his loved ones.

Mum Emma Brook said: “I’m really proud of him. I still can’t believe how much he’s been through and how well he’s doing.”

Alfie, of Hyrst Garth, Batley Carr, received a standing ovation when he joined his parents on stage at the Yorkshire Children of Courage and Achievements Awards on Friday evening.

He was presented with a special recognition award after being nominated by his cousin Louis Brook.

“He’s a real fighter,” said Louis, 13. “It’s the fact that he’s young and going through so much. He’s so brave.”

Louis himself knows all about the courage it takes to battle health problems. He received one of the awards last year in recognition of his outstanding bravery after undergoing a liver transplant and fighting cancer.

Emma, 34, said she was taken aback when she got a call to say Alfie had won.

“I couldn’t believe it. I had goosebumps,” she said.

“You think about why he’s getting it and it is upsetting, but it was a lovely night.”

Alfie, who is almost three, was cheered on by 10 family members including his dad, Damian Holland, and sister, Chloe Holland, nine.

And they are all proud to see just how far he has come.

Emma said: “He falls over a bit and he can’t use his right hand at all, but, he’s got his speech back now. He’s doing a lot of physio.

“He’s really good and copes so well.”
