LAST week the News bid a fond farewell to Wilton Park’s dedicated warden, Barry Daly.

The 67-year-old was due to patrol the park one last time on Sunday – but after a last-minute reprieve, Mr Daly has kept his job and will be returning to Batley’s largest park.

Mr Daly asked to continue his role as a park warden amid a council review of park ranger roles across Kirklees.

In August Kirklees Council said after his retirement, the ranger team would no longer have a dedicated office at Wilton Park.

Instead, it said seven-day park ranger cover would be maintained by a team.

Last Friday Mr Daly said goodbye to colleagues and received retirement gifts ahead of his last shift on Sunday.

But on Friday evening, Mr Daly’s request to stay on was accepted at the last minute and he will now continue to patrol Kirklees’ parks.

The park ranger will no longer be based at Wilton but will be in the park at certain times.

He said: “I’m really, really pleased because I like the job and I like the people. Hopefully there’s more exciting days at the park to look forward to.”

A council spokesman said: “Barry made a request to stay on and this was duly considered with the result that he has been allowed to continue with the council. Unfortunately, and for various reasons largely outside of our control, this decision could not be made until the 11th hour and as such the celebrations had been held – prematurely. However, we understand Barry is delighted with the decision.”
