A woman who worked in nursing until well into her seventies celebrated her 100th birthday last week.
Mary Ann Squires marked the milestone with a party for family and friends at the Priestley care home in Birstall where she has lived for the last five years.
Around 30 members of her large family helped her to celebrate.
Mrs Squires was born in Ossett and at 13 started work in service in Leeds. She moved to Gawthorpe and then to Westborough in Dewsbury after marrying miner John Squires in 1932.
Most of her working life was spent as a nursing auxiliary at the Ravens Lee annexe of the old Dewsbury General Hospital. “She carried on til well into her 70s,” said her son, George. “She was dedicated and she loved the job.”
Mr and Mrs Squires had five children and lived in Westborough for most of their married life. They spent five years in retirement in Scarborough, with Mrs Squires returning to Westborough on the death of her husband. She later lived in Liversedge, moving to Birstall five years ago.
She has 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Saturday’s party had a singer, buffet tea, a special cake and a card from the Queen.
“She stayed the course and really enjoyed it,” said Mr Squires. “She has always been a very active lady.”
