It started with a stroll and created a love affair lasting decades.

Derek and Shirley Ackroyd are celebrating their diamond wedding today after they met on a summer’s walk in Howley.

The pair, of Manor Road, Soothill, kept in touch and quickly became a couple, tying the knot at Soothill Congregational Church in 1953.

Derek, 81, worked as a boiler maker and his wife worked at Jessops Mill.

They have lived in Soothill all of their lives and are both involved in the community.

Derek has been a member of Soothill Working Men’s Club since 1967, which the couple still regularly attend.

They also were winning members of Soothill Bowling Club.

Derek said: “One day we thought we would go down and watch. They asked us if we wanted to have a go and after playing for a bit they told us we were in the team next week!”

Derek received a trophy for winning the league in 2006, and his wife won the same title a year later.

The pair have one daughter, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter.

Shirley, 80, said: “We spend every day together so that would be the secret of a happy marriage.”
