A protest petition about the amount of dog dirt on Batley streets has drawn more than 200 signatures.

Organiser Eileen Hartley says she is delighted with the response to her clean-up campaign and now plans to send the petition off to ward councillors and local MP, Mike Wood.

Copies have already been sent to Kirklees Council’s dog warden service, expressing residents’ concerns and disappointment.

The row erupted after The News was inundated with complaints from people angry about dog-fouling in the town and owners’ failure to pick up the mess.

One person described the area as ‘dog poo city’.

Mrs Hartley, of Upper Batley Lane, read about the problem and decided to take action.

“We see this as a serious health and environmental issue,” she said. “It is unsatisfactory. We have a very good response to the petition. All the replies were positive.”

Postal workers are among those who have sided with the campaign. “They agree that this is a worry,” said Mrs Hartley. “They see the problem every day.

“All those we have spoken to are of the same mind. It’s very much a majority who are concerned about this.

“So we will see what response we get from the councillors and the MP.”
