Ducks snuggle up for the winter in cosy new homes

WITH the winter weather taking its toll, a warm, dry place to snuggle up is more important than ever.
And for the ducks at Wilton Park, their refurbished huts on the lake’s island are just the ticket.
The new huts, built by the Scouts in a project with the now disbanded Friends of Wilton Park, were placed on the island last July.
With the breeding season due to start at the end of the month, the houses are essential to keep the feathered friends cosy.
Park warden Barry Daley said the ducks were doing fine in their new homes.
“Most of them now will start breeding, before long the females will use them big style,” he said.
“Throughout the bad weather the female ducks have been going inside to nest.” Mr Daley added that over the next few weeks, the behaviour of the ducks would change as they prepared to breed and bring their young into the world.
He said: “The dog walkers and park visitors know what’s happening and they watch out for them.”
Watch out – the huts could be home to fluffy ducklings in the coming months.
