A DOCTOR’S surgery will see the end of an era tomorrow as a GP retires after 35 years’ service.
Dr David Barker, senior partner at Wellington House Surgery, Batley, joined the practice in 1977 as a newly qualified doctor – his dream career and a job he said he still enjoyed to this day.
“It’s something I always wanted to do,” he said.
Cards and presents have been flooding into his office as patients say goodbye, some having seen Dr Barker for their entire lives.
“My ethos has always been to treat patients as part of my family.
“It makes me feel very humbled, because all I feel is that I have done my job to the best of my ability.”
Dr Barker’s colleagues celebrated his retirement with a farewell barbecue at the Gomersal Park Hotel on Tuesday.
The 60-year-old now plans to spend his golden years caravanning with his wife, Kate, and spending time with his grandchildren.
“I have had a good team to work with,” he said. “I will miss the practice and the patients. They have been part of my life for a long time.”
