Parents and children said an emotional goodbye as a Batley nursery closed its doors for a final time.
Batley Central Daycare Centre, in Park Road, held its last session on Friday after council chiefs voted to close the nursery earlier this year.
Kirklees Council’s Cabinet decided to axe the nursery, despite pleas from parents who said they only found out about the proposal days before the decision was made in Huddersfield.
The closure will save the council £97,000 in running costs and around 40 children will need to find new daycare provision.
Parent Sadie Booker, whose 22-month-old son Daniel attended the nursery, said: “Everyone was crying and it was upsetting to know that it was the end.”
Staff at the nursery organised fun activities throughout the week to say goodbye to the children.
They held a party last Friday and had a special dinner in the afternoon.
All the children were also awarded graduation certificates.
Mrs Booker said: “All the parents and children gave the staff presents and cards to say thank you for all their hard work, which set everybody off crying again.”
Mrs Booker has been forced to find a new nursery for her son, but she insists the transition has been difficult.
She said: “A lot of parents have had trouble and it has been really difficult because of the timescale.”
