Firm wins contract to help young people get educated

A FIRM is celebrating after winning a contract from Kirklees Council that will allow it to provide free education to young people.

InHouse Training in Ravensthorpe has secured funding to offer courses to 16-18-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training.

The free courses, available until April, include beauty therapy, hairdressing, sports and leisure, and English and maths.

Project manager Shehzad Hussain said: “This new contract is something that we feel quite proud of on the basis that it will help a lot of young people in North Kirklees.

“We have a lot of young people in North Kirklees and it’s an opportunity for them to train in an non-traditional educational environment.”

InHouse Training was set up in 2005 and already provides a range of NVQs to young people. Its base in Huddersfield Road has a state-of-the-art hair salon, a gym, a games room and informal teaching areas.

“It’s not a classroom-based nine-to-five setting,” Mr Hussain said. “People who come through our door are absolutely amazed at what’s on offer.”

“The good thing is that rather than doing nothing and being at home, not working and not getting an education, young people can give us a ring.”

InHouse Training also provides for younger people – there are youth clubs every weekend and fun activities are arranged during the school holidays.

The firm also offers women-only courses and if there are eight or more people from one area on a course, InHouse will provide transport for them to get to class.

“The more people that do these free courses the better it is for them, because we might not be able to do it next year,” Mr Hussain added.
