Fraudsters dupe Tesco
VICTIMS: Tesco Extra, Batley.
CONFUSED cashiers were duped out of £200 in a money exchange scam.
Staff at Tesco in Batley fell victim to a con that saw three fraudsters trick them into doubling their money.
Two men and a woman, described as eastern European, went into the Bradford Road store at around 6pm on Friday and bought a small item from the customer service point before asking to change some money.
After tricking the cashier into swapping £100 for £200, the trio repeated the scam at one of the tills.
A police spokesman said: “By confusing the assistant with their behaviour, prolonged questions and language issues, the suspects were able to ultimately get £200 in return for £100 they had tried to change.”
The trio then left in an unknown direction and police are currently checking CCTV in the area in a bid to identify them and learn more about the scam.
Officers are also warning business owners to be wary and not to change money with people if they have any doubts about their behaviour.
Witnesses are asked to contact Batley Neighbourhood Policing Team via 101.
Tesco declined to comment on the fraud while police investigations were under way.
