Funding approved for sport, roads and more

More than £100,000 of funding was approved by councillors at Tuesday’s meeting of the Batley, Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee.

A sum of £1,331.50 was approved for floral decorations in Batley town centre with a yellow Tour de France theme.

Councillors also approved £2,000 of funding for a feasibility study to be carried out on the Manor Field playing pitch in Chestnut Avenue, Batley, which suffers from drainage problems.

Day care charity Milen Care, which provides services for elderly disabled Asian residents, was granted £1,995 for its silver jubilee celebrations and a health awareness week.

Total Sports Foundation were awarded £2,625 for a two-week summer sports school at Wilton Park and Staincliffe Park, while Batley Bulldogs were also granted £4,690 for a new stairlift.

A further £28,539.69 was allocated to highways improvements in Batley West. Councillors are due to decide which schemes to prioritise for improvement, with plans drawn up for works in Grange Avenue, Roman Road and Moorend Lane, as well as pavement schemes in Norfolk Avenue and Grange Avenue, Carlton Avenue, Chapel Fold and Woodsome Estate.

For Batley East, £11,043.63 will be contributed to improvement schemes for the Mill Lane/Hanging Heaton carriage way, as well as Field Lane, Mill Road and Wood Road. Funds of £21,000 were also agreed for highways improvements in Birstall and Birkenshaw, to be decided by ward councillors. A total of £25,794.84 was also allocated to the Birkenshaw and Birstall wards for a programme of environmental improvements.
