Golfers clubbing together to help

A golf club hopes that installing a new defibrillator will help saves in its village.

East Bierley residents now have access to the equipment which was was funded by generous golfers at the local course.

Although it will be kept on-site at East Bierley Golf Club to treat members and visitors, it will also be available to the community in an emergency.

Past East Bierley captains Barrie and Eileen Craig and former president Mike Bateman all donated cash towards its purchase, and Steve and Sylvia Moorhouse ran a sponsored run for the cause.

Current president Trevor Haigh welcomed around 70 golfers and villagers to an introductory training session in the clubhouse to help familiarise people with first aid techniques.

Access is granted by the ambulance service, who provide 999 callers with a code to unlock the storage unit.

Community defibrillator officer Dave Jones taught the audience how to use the new piece of equipment.

Mr Haigh said: “We are grateful to those who have donated to enable the golf club to provide this facility. While we hope it will not be needed, it is reassuring to know that it is available.

“The golf club prides itself on being part of the village of East Bierley and we are proud to be able to offer this community facility to those in the immediate vicinity as well as to our members and visitors.
