Hello police, I’d like to report a snowball fight!

GAME OVER: Residents have been calling Batley police to report youths having snowball fights.

GAME OVER: Residents have been calling Batley police to report youths having snowball fights.

SNOWY days are usually filled by wrapping up warm and having fun – but not everybody is smiling, it seems.

Batley Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) has had a flurry of calls from people reporting youngsters for throwing snowballs.

Since the first flakes fell on Saturday, police have had three to four reports a day from members of public who believe they are being targeted by youths playing in the snow.

Batley NPT Coordinator Martyn Lee said for the most part, snowball fights were ‘just what youngsters do’.

He said: “People seem to think they are being targeted if a snowball explodes on their window. It’s just one of those things, like fireworks on bonfire night.”

Mr Lee said people tended to go ‘head over heels’ for the snow as it didn’t happen very often, but snowball fights were not a police matter.

He said: “If there’s something more to it we will look into it. But people won’t get visited by police because they have been snowballed.

“We haven’t got problems with snowballing in Batley.”

Over the weekend, people had phoned to report snowballs hitting their homes or groups of young people playing outside.

However Mr Lee said it could often be unreasonable to report snowball fights when no harm was being done.

He said: “We’re not averse to youngsters having fun. It’s a matter of people playing with snow.”

WHAT do you think? Can snowball-throwing be intimidating? Or is it just harmless fun?

well it is an offence cont to s 28 Town police clauses act to throw milssilesin the street to the annoyance of residents or passengers, or perhaps the police do not know the law. And that would not surprise me in the least!

Well given the general behaviour of most of the children that hang around the streets in Batley I think that response from the police is pathetic It is more than likely they were deliberately targeting people, usually elderly or vulnerable, Just as they do the rest of the year without snow It’s long overdue that something was done about these feral brats
