ONE of the first new social housing schemes to be built by Kirklees Council for many years has been officially opened.

Asquith Fields, off White Lee Road in Heckmondwike, comprises 36 affordable homes which have been built with energy-saving in mind.

Residents, ward councillors and council representatives were invited to the official ribbon-cutting ceremony which was performed by MP Mike Wood.

The development was the result of a successful bid for nearly £2m from the Homes and Communities Agency as part of the Local Authority New Build Programme 2009, plus matched borrowing from Kirklees Council.

The properties have now been let by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, which is managing the scheme, and the residents have moved in and are delighted with their new homes.

The development is a mix of three and four-bedroom homes, including three purpose-built for those with disabilities.

Each home has a garden, a shed, a rotary dryer and a compost bin and eight have integral garages.

They have been built with high standards of energy efficiency which should mean lower energy bills and reduced impact on the environment.

The name Asquith Fields was chosen by a local resident reflecting the history of the site which was formerly owned by the Asquith family.

Social housing contractor and developer Bramall Construction provided work for three local people as part of the scheme.

It will now find the apprentices further work with the company so they can complete their training.

Cabinet member for housing and ward councillor Coun David Sheard welcomed the scheme saying: “The Asquith Fields development provides good quality affordable homes for local families which will be suitable for them at all stages of their lives.

“It has also ensured that the sustainable way in which they have been built makes the least demand on the environment as possible.”
