Inconsiderate parents have been fined for parking illegally outside Batley schools, new figures have revealed.
Traffic enforcement patrols outside schools in the town have been stepped up after frequent complaints from residents and pedestrians.
Figures obtained by the Freedom of Information Act show five penalty notices were issued to parents parking outside of Field Lane Primary School, in Albion Street, last year.
Officers also issued four fines to drivers outside Batley Grammar School, in Carlinghow Hill, and the same amount to drivers outside Staincliffe Junior School, in Staincliffe Hall Road, last year.
A total of 15 fines were issued to drivers in 2013, compared to just six the previous year.
A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “Areas with known school parking problems are patrolled with the council’s CCTV vehicle and this has resulted in penalty charge notices being issued on Carlinghow Hill near Batley Grammar School recently.
“The council also took part in a focus day at this school a fortnight ago along with the police.
“CCTV enforcement or officer patrols are done on a random basis at the district’s 200 schools unless specific requests have been made and these can come from the schools concerned, members of the public or the police.”
Residents of Carlinghow Hill have long claimed it is common practice for parents to block pavements, driveways and junctions on streets surrounding during peak times.
On Facebook, Asmah Laher said: “Outside Batley Grammar there are always cars parked on double yellow lines and parents stop their cars on zig zags in front of the school, whilst staff are on duty, both morning & evenings.
Mike Bedford added: “I have lived on Carlinghow Hill for 10 years now and can tell you that the traffic generated by the school runs has been an absolute nightmare to live with in all those years.
“I have encountered nothing but abuse from the so called parents and despite letters of apology from the schools, nothing improves.”
Drivers found to have parked illegally are fined £70, but the fee is reduced by 50 per cent if paid within 14 days.
