This year has started with a real brush with success for Batley-based artist Tony Noble.

One of his paintings has been chosen for a prestigious London exhibition and with it the chance of a £25,000 prize.

A painting titled Garages, Sunday Morning has clinched a place in this year’s Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize display, which opens on February 19.

The painting is part of a series showing a row of garages in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury – one of which was owned by his late aunt.

And next month, Tony, who works from his studio in Redbrick Mill, Batley Carr, will also be submitting work for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London and the BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, also in the capital.

“This is what I have been working towards – promoting myself in London,” said Tony, who has submitted work for the BP display on four previous occasions.

He has five pieces ready for the Mall Galleries and is waiting to see if any are accepted.

The acclaimed artist has been painting the Ravensthorpe garages for the last 10 years. “It has become a kind of record of decay and the effects of time on such buildings,” he said.

“They were always great places to play when I was a kid and when I see them I get so nostalgic. I hope that comes through in the paintings.”

For the Painter-Stainers prize, some 70 pieces of work for the show are selected from around 1,000 entries. “It is very competitive,” said Tony, a former schoolteacher. “Getting in is never a foregone conclusion. The London displays are my main point of focus, but BP is the big one. I love doing portrait work and it’s a great showcase.

“It took about three months to do but you have to invest a lot in these things.”
