Jayne Mansfield documentary to have glitzy Bradford screening
A DOCUMENTARY about a Hollywood star’s visit to a Batley club will be shown at a glitzy screening.
Celebrity reporter Neil Sean’s From Hollywood to Yorkshire explores Jayne Mansfield’s performance at the former Batley Variety Club in April 1967, and will be screened at the Midland Hotel in Bradford on Sunday September 9.
The busty blonde bombshell was famous for her breathy voice and roles in films such as The Girl Can’t Help It in 1956.
But after her movie career faded, the starlet embarked on a Northern club tour, also visiting Bradford and Halifax.
Her appearance at the Bradford Road club ensured she would be remembered long after her tragic death in a car accident just two months later, in June 1967.
Mr Sean, originally from Mirfield, began to research Mansfield after his own parents reminisced about seeing her perform.
He said: “How did they get such a big star to come along to our area? It would be like getting Angelina Jolie, she was that big.”
The documentary explores the triumph and sadness of Mansfield’s life, and includes interviews with the people who worked with her on tour, revealing the girl behind the glamour.
The screening will begin at 2.30pm and is free to attend.
Mr Sean is keen for people who remember her performance to come along to be interviewed and share their memories for a new TV programme.
