DEDICATED volunteers are on a mission to make the next Batley Festival even better than its 2012 debut.

The group behind this year’s festivities has already started meeting to decide what’s in store for next year’s festival – and wants you to be a part of it.

Volunteers are calling for more people to come on board to make the 2013 festival, on Saturday September 21, a real community event.

The festival, which spreads across the market square, town hall, library and memorial gardens, made its successful debut in September with live entertainment, dance workshops, and stalls from local community groups.

Funding from Kirklees Council has been secured for the 2013 and 2014 festivals and volunteer Mandy Oliver said there was plenty to get involved with.

“At the festival the great and good of Batley came to show what’s happening in the town,” she said.

“We want offers and ideas for what we can stage on the day, what people like to see.”

The group hopes to arrange more street entertainment, dance taster sessions and a variety of stalls for next year and will stage another variety show in the town hall.

“One of the things that really went down well were the dance workshops,” Mandy added.

“People like to try something they haven’t tried before.”

The organisers are also appealing for businesses to show their support for the festival by offering sponsorship or hosting a market stall.

People wanting to get involved with the festival can email arts.creativity@kirklees.gov.uk.

The volunteers will next meet on Tuesday January 8 from 6pm to 8pm in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Mandy added: “It was a learning experience for all of us and we got to know more people in Batley, so we formed a new friendship group as well.”
