SCHOOL might be out for half term, but some primary school pupils used the spare time to test their maths and literacy skills.
Batley’s two high schools opened their doors to more than 100 year six pupils from local primary schools, giving them the chance to try higher level subjects.
The two-day numeracy and literacy sessions at Batley Girls’ High School and Batley Business and Enterprise College were used as an aid for the pupils, who are preparing for their SATS exams.
They also helped them prepare for the move from primary school to high school.
Batley Girls’ assistant headteacher Emma Rodrigues said the sessions were held at the request of a number of primary schools.
She said: “We felt that it was really important to work with the local primary schools to help students aim for level five scores at the end year six.
“Both high schools have been working very closely with all the primary schools in order to ensure that we build on the excellent work that we all do in providing Batley and Birstall children with the best education possible; something that we have all got a proven track record of.”
Pupils took part in challenging literacy tasks at Batley Girls’ on Monday, and visited Batley Business and Enterprise College on Tuesday, where they were given lessons in geometry, measuring and handling data.
Mrs Rodrigues said the initiative was just the first of many now the two schools had formed a partnership with local primary schools.
